Charity shops can contain everything from ordinary household goods to discontinued electronics, quality clothing and collectible items. The challenge is recognising which is which while you are standing in the shop.

Use the photo scanner as a first pass. If an item appears unusually valuable, do a deeper check before buying: verify the exact model, size, maker, condition and authenticity, and look at completed sales rather than relying only on asking prices.

Remember that an estimated resale price is not profit. If you intend to resell, account for marketplace fees, postage, packaging, returns and the time it may take to find a buyer.

How to get a better estimate

  • Photograph one item at a time in good light.
  • Add the exact brand, model, size or part number when you can.
  • Choose the condition realistically and mention faults or missing parts.
  • For unusual, rare or high-value items, verify the result with specialist evidence.
  • Compare sold prices as well as current asking prices before listing.

HowMuchForThis provides resale estimates, not formal appraisals or guaranteed sale prices. Actual prices depend on condition, location, demand, marketplace and the information available.
